Nature Reserves
Port Edward’s unusual claim to fame is the Red Desert. The world’s smallest desert. This lies some 10 kilometres west of the town and is only 200 m in diameter and 11 hectares in its entirety. Best described as a miniature version of the Arizona Desert, the man high hills and valleys of naked red soil bare stark contrast to to the surrounding lush and tropical vegetation. Archeological artefacts going back millions of years can be found and the locals are pleased this is now an internationally protected heritage site.
The Umtamvuna Nature Reserve is situated in South Africa on the KwaZulu-Natal side of the Mtamvuna River, and is managed by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife. The reserve is 3,257 hectares in extent and was established on 25 July 1971
Visitors to the estate can sample coffee and purchase the range of freshly roasted Beaver Creek coffee and other coffees of the world. The estate also offers visitors a daily crop to cup tour that outlines the distinctive flavours of the worlds coffee regions and the processes involved in creating the perfect cup.

There is a variety of flavours and cuisine to be found at Wild Coast Sun’s restaurants and bars. You can grab a quick bite to eat at one of the fast food stores or indulge in a meal with an Indian Ocean backdrop at the various sit-down restaurants, suited to cater for every taste and occasion.
Flora & Fauna
Bushbuck and blue duiker live in the dune forest surrounding the Lodge, and the wetland reserve below is home to resident otters, fish eagles, herons, egrets, dikkops and a variety of waterfowl.
Beaches
The beach and rock pools of Dolphin Bay are accessed by walking 200 m across adjoining lawns, without having to go on any roads, while a major swimming beach with shark nets and life-guards is available at Glenmore about 2 km to the south.

Camelot Spa at San Lameer is a large five star health and welness centre.
Having opened in 2002, with the proviso to offer affordable wellness treatments to the public, Mangwanani Spa in Port Edward combines the best African-inspired therapies and treatments to leave you feeling rejuvenated and refreshed.
